 Lima Adaptation Knowledge Initiative

 Highlights

​​​​​​The Lima Adaptation Knowledge Initiative (LAKI) is a joint action pledge under the Nairobi work programme between the UNFCCC Secretariat and UN Environment through its Global Adaptation Network (GAN). Priority-setting workshops are convened with multi-stakeholder expert groups to identify, categorize, and prioritize climate change adaptation knowledge gaps for specific subregions and sectors/themes (see methodology be​low). The LAKI then works with global and subregional partners to catalyze activities to bridge these knowledge gaps.​ In 2018, Parties to the UNFCCC welcomed the next phase of the LAKI (FCCC/SBSTA/2018/4) which aims to narrow the 85 knowledge gaps identified and scale up the LAKI to new subregions. Initial activities are underway and the LAKI is currently seeking partners to support the further implementation of the initiative.​​

The UNFCCC secretariat and UNEP (through Global Adaptation Network), in partnership with sub regional coordination entities, have convened seven priority-setting workshop with experts, one for each subregion. The workshops covered a total of 52 countries including 17 small islands developing States (SIDS), 11 least developed countries (LDCs), and 13 African countries. A total of 150 priority adaptation knowledge gaps for targeted knowledge users have been identified through a systematic methodology spanning seven subregions. These have been organized by subregion, thematic area, and cluster (knowledge type) to allow stakeholders to pinpoint synergies and design more efficient, cost-effective responses. 

Several actions have been undertaken in collaboration with global and regional centres and networks, universities and NWP partners to address adaptation knowledge gaps for the targeted knowledge users in various countries and subregions.​​
