Description:
The Coastal EBA Decision Support Tool (DST) aims to support national environmental units in the selection, design, implementation and evaluation of options for coastal ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change (EBA). It is relevant to both those with and those without prior expertise in climate change adaptation, as well as to individuals from a range of sectors wishing to learn more about EBA. The tool outlines seven key steps which support the planning and implementation process. These steps form part of an iterative planning and implementation cycle, where the adaptation process is evolving and maturing through learning and practical experiences. For each step, the DST covers: why the step is important; key questions to address; key concepts; and useful resources and material for extra information. The tool is designed to support coastal EBA. However, it is important to note that EBA is likely to be only one part of wider adaptation planning. Therefore, this tool presents steps in planning for EBA in relation to tools for planning adaptation more broadly, and highlights specific details and steps most relevant to coastal EBA. This is done deliberately to show how planning for EBA links to developing other adaptation actions and to broader adaptation planning. Although the tool is focused on EBA in coastal zones, it also highlights the linkages between interventions across the entire (terrestrial) system.
