NAP Description: Browse resources related to gender-sensitive approaches and tools for adaptation in the Adaptation Knowledge Portal, and learn more about engagement opportunities in these thematic areas under the Nairobi work programme below.
NAP Summary:
Page Content: Activities on gender-sensitive approaches and tools for
adaptation
have been undertaken under the NWP (in response to SBSTA38 mandate). Further,COP19 decided that
activities under the NWP should integrate gender
issues
, indigenous and traditional knowledge, and the role of and impacts
on ecosystems.

Gender-sensitive approaches and tools
for understanding and assessing impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate
change refer to methodologies and practices applied to ensure that both men’s
and women’s concerns, aspirations, opportunities and capacities are taken into
account. Indeed, Women are disproportionately affected by climate change, owing
in particular to unequal access to resources and decision-making. The
application of gender-sensitive approaches for adaptation can contribute to:

    Catalyzing actions that recognize and integrate
the different vulnerabilities, knowledge and roles of men and women;
    Empowering women as agents of change and
innovation (rather than considering women as mere victims of climate change),
and creating a win-win situation;
    Ensuring the acceptance of new adaptation
technologies in communities;
    Cost-saving opportunities for adaptation
projects and programmes;
    More resilient, effective and efficient policies
and practices.
