The Nairobi Work Programme (NWP) expert group on agriculture and food security aims to strengthen climate action toward adaptation and resilience for agriculture and food security under the UNFCCC process. The expert group can help address key gaps and challenges through collaboration among expert group members, with the UNFCCC constituted bodies, other thematic expert groups of the NWP, NWP partners as well as relevant communities of practice.
In undertaking its work, the expert group will follow the established practice of other NWP expert groups including:
- taking a demand-driven approach to ensure that the collaborative actions are responsive to the needs of Parties;
- working to ensure that knowledge products are tailored to the needs of knowledge users and accessible in order to maximize the uptake of adaptation knowledge and increase the usefulness of the products to knowledge users implementing adaptation action;
- taking a long-term perspective that facilitates and supports the implementation of adaptation and resilience actions in an inclusive and participatory manner;
- enhancing the exchange of information, experiences, and best practices to address challenges and needs amongst a broad range of stakeholders.
Composition of the expert group
The secretariat applied rigorous criteria to ensure an inclusive and multi-disciplinary composition of the expert group. The criteria included:

- thematic expertise on delivering means of implementation for adaptation and resilience (such as capacity building, technology and finance);
- regional and gender balance.
Scope of the work
The role of the expert group includes:
- providing inputs to the scoping of relevant adaptation and resilience knowledge needs as well as good practices in climate change adaptation for agriculture, and food security;
- engaging with other expert groups to strengthen the partnership and explore synergistic collaborations with NWP partner organizations, Parties, and other relevant organizations;
- refining knowledge, co-designing actions tailored to the needs of the target knowledge users, and facilitating partnerships to inform future activities to be undertaken under the NWP;
