In response to the invitation of the Subsidiary Body for
Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) at its 44th session, the NWP has opened a call for submissions in the area of ecosystems,
interrelated areas such as water resources, and adaptation, on the
following topics:

Lessons learned and good practices on adaptation planning processes addressing ecosystems and interrelated areas such as water resources;

Lessons
learned and good practices in monitoring and evaluating the implementation of
ecosystem-based adaptation;

Tools
for assessing the benefits of mitigation and adaptation to enhancing resilience
and emissions reductions that ecosystem-based adaptation provides.

Parties, NWP partner organizations and other relevant organizations are invited to contribute their submission before January 25, 2017. Parties are welcome to post their submission on the UNFCCC website; NWP partner organizations and other relevant organizations are invited to send their submissions to secretariat@unfccc.int and nwp@unfccc.int. The call for submissions is also available on the UNFCCC website.

1. Which elements should be considered
in the submission?

The submission could take the form of a concise
document highlighting relevant activities carried out in relation to research, analyses,
tools, methods, approaches, projects, programmes and/or policies that your country
or organization has recently developed, used and/or implemented. Submissions should address one
or several of the specific three topics mentioned above. It would be very helpful if the submission could provide the following
details for the different topics:

A.  Adaptation planning
processes addressing ecosystems and interrelated areas such as water resources:

Description of relevant activities and collaborating partner institution/s (if any)
Key results
Description of lessons learned and good practices
Description of key challenges
Planned next steps (as appropriate)

B. Monitoring and
evaluating the implementation of ecosystem-based adaptation

Description of relevant activities and collaborating partner institution/s (if any)
Key results
Description of lessons learned and good practices
Description of key challenges
Planned next steps (as appropriate)

 C. Tools for assessing
the benefits of mitigation and adaptation to enhancing resilience and emissions
reductions that ecosystem-based adaptation provides.

Description of the tool/method or tool kit
Partner institution/s (if any)
Key results if the tool has been tested and challenges (as appropriate)
Planned next steps (if any)

For each activity and example that you will include in
the submission, please provide relevant hyperlinks, including to information sources,
pictures, and/or graphics.

Should you need any further information, please, do
not hesitate to contact the NWP team, at nwp@unfccc.int.

2. How
will your submission inform the climate negotiations during SBSTA 46?

The submissions of Parties, NWP partner organizations and other relevant
organizations will form the basis of a synthesis
report on ecosystems, water resources and adaptation
, which will be
considered by the SBSTA in May 2017. The synthesis report, to be prepared in
collaboration with relevant NWP partner organizations, will provide key findings based on submissions and highlight good practices and lessons
learned
as well as relevant tools. The synthesis report will also
summarize the key challenges that are barriers to adaptation actions addressing
ecosystem and water resources and possible ways to address these for Parties to
consider during SBSTA 46.

3. How
can you engage on ecosystems, water resources and adaptation under the NWP beyond
the submission?

In case your country or your organization has developed knowledge products
in the form of case studies, tools/methods and/or other knowledge resources in
the field of ecosystems, water resources and adaptation, please do not hesitate
to share them via the Adaptation knowledge portal.

If your organization has expertise on ecosystems and adaptation, and is not an NWP partner organization yet, you are welcome to join the programme. By having your organization join the NWP you will be informed of all future opportunities for
collaboration on ecosystems, water resources and adaptation under the UNFCCC
process. Joining
the NWP is a very simple and non-binding process that can be performed online.
