Climate change will have profound impacts
on human health. Extreme weather events increase morbidity and mortality.
Shifts in temperature and precipitation adversely impact crop production and
nutrition, but also change disease transmission patterns. A deteriorating
health situation is also likely to have dramatic impacts on economic
productivity, and ultimately on poverty rates.

During the climate conference last May, the
SBSTA gave the NWP the mandate to investigate climate change impacts on
human health. This topic will be informed primarily through submissions from
Parties, NWP partners, and other relevant organizations. Submissions are due 29 August 2016.

the call for submissions.

The 10th Focal Point Forum on
health and adaptation will be organized under the NWP, to present the key
findings of the submissions and address emerging issues. The Forum will be held
in conjunction with SBSTA 45, at COP 22 in Marrakech in November 2016. After
the forum, the submissions’ key findings, including good practices and lessons
learned, as well as the outcomes of the Focal Point Forum discussion, will be
captured in the synthesis report. This synthesis document will be considered by Parties at SBSTA 46 in May 2017.
